How Hearing Aids Work
It is not uncommon for hearing loss to affect only one ear or both ears, but to varying degrees. A situation where only one ear is affected is called unilateral hearing loss, unilateral hearing loss (OST), or unilateral deafness (OSH) if it is a profound hearing loss. This condition is treated differently than hearing loss affecting both ears. There are special hearing correction solutions that help wirelessly transmit an audio signal to the ear that hears better.

BTE Hearing Aids
In behind-the-ear hearing aids, all functional components are housed inside a wear-resistant enclosure that sits behind the ear. Audible signals are conducted into the user’s ear directly through a small tube attached to the earmold. Typically, BTE hearing aids are the largest, but at the same time, they are the best solution for those who need the most power.
Hearing aids with external receiver (RIC)
IAnother type of hearing aid is the RIC. These hearing aids are placed behind the ear, just like behind-the-ear hearing aids. The difference is that the speaker is located inside the ear – in the earmold. It is separated from the rest of the machine and has a wired connection to the case. These hearing aids are usually smaller, lighter than behind-the-ear hearing aids, and are less visible, but they are not powerful enough for people with profound hearing loss.
In-the-Ear Hearing Aids (ITE)
IIn-the-ear hearing aids are placed completely inside the ear. Within this category, there are many varieties, from larger and more powerful Full Shell appliances to smaller devices that sit entirely in the ear canal (CIC) and are virtually invisible.
